She was born between 1719 and 1730 in Petersburg (modern-day St. Petersburg). Little is known about her early life and youth, but she became well-known for her life following the tragic death of her husband.<\/p><p>Xenia&#8217;s husband, Andrei Fyodorovich Petrov, was a singer in the court choir. After his unexpected death without Christian repentance, Xenia was deeply affected and sought salvation through a religious life. She renounced her possessions and began to live as a fool-for-Christ, forsaking material gains and dedicating her life to prayer, fasting, and helping the poor.<\/p><p>Xenia became renowned for her miraculous deeds and clairvoyance. She was widely venerated as a helper and protector, and her blessed intercession was credited with saving and assisting many people. In doing so, she aimed to, by renouncing the most precious in human beings\u2014the intellect\u2014plead for mercy from the Creator for her suddenly departed spouse. Xenia renounced all worldly possessions\u2014her status and wealth\u2014and, more than that, she renounced herself. She abandoned her name, taking on her husband&#8217;s name, and journeyed with him, offering to the altar of God the gifts of salvific love for her neighbor.<\/p><p>On the day of her husband&#8217;s funeral, Xenia dressed in his clothing\u2014vest, coat, trousers, and cap. Clad in this manner, she joined the funeral procession, causing her relatives and friends to believe that the death of Andrei Fyodorovich had clouded her sanity. They all felt deep sympathy for her. Xenia, as one who had lost her mind, comforted them, saying, &#8222;Andrei Fyodorovich has not died; he has incarnated in me, Xenia, who died long ago.&#8220; This marked the beginning of her wandering through the streets of Petersburg.<\/p><p>She decided to give away the house she inherited after her husband&#8217;s death to Paraskeva Antonova, who had been renting a room from her. Xenia chose to distribute all her possessions to the poor and take the money to the church for the repose of the souls of &#8222;God&#8217;s servant Xenia.&#8220;<\/p><p>Upon learning of her decision, the relatives of her husband appealed to the authorities, requesting that Xenia not be allowed to distribute all her property in her state of folly. Exposed to various accusations and mockery, day after day, in winter and summer, in heat and cold, she roamed the streets of Petersburg. Her peculiar attire and unintelligible speech, her gentleness, and harmlessness provoked the ridicule of malicious people, especially mischievous boys who taunted her. However, Blessed Xenia, incessantly praying, unwaveringly carried out her salvific endeavor.<\/p><p>This period coincided with the beginning of the construction of a new stone church at the Smolensky Cemetery. The structure being erected was already quite tall, so the masons had to first lift the bricks onto scaffolding before building. Blessed Xenia decided to secretly assist the builders. During the nights, regardless of the weather, she would lift bricks and stack them on the scaffolding. Workers were astonished in the morning by what was happening. Eventually, they decided to find out who this invisible helper was. She didn&#8217;t accept alms from everyone but only from the good-hearted and kind people. Always taking only a small coin, she immediately gave it to the poor similar to herself.<\/p><p>As her husband&#8217;s attire became worn over time, she started dressing in poor rags during both winter and summer. With bare and frost-swollen feet, she wore torn shoes. Many offered her warm clothing and footwear, but Blessed Xenia refused to take anything and alternately wore either a red blouse and green skirt or a green blouse and red skirt.<\/p><p>During the day, Xenia, as a madwoman, wandered through the city, while at night, hiding from human eyes, she went outside the city to the fields, where she spent time in prayer, alternately bowing to all four sides of the world. In the field, according to her words, the presence of God was &#8222;more visible.&#8220;<\/p><p>Soon, people started paying attention to the fact that there was often a profound meaning hidden in her words and actions. They observed that if Xenia asked something of someone, it was a sign that she was helping and saving them from trouble and hardship that would befall them. Through this gift, she helped many in arranging their lives and saving their souls.<\/p><p>There is a well-known case when Blessed Xenia cared for the well-being and salvation of an unborn child. As a longtime acquaintance, she went to Paraskeva Antonova, to whom she had given her house, and said, &#8222;Here you sit sewing socks, not knowing that God has sent you a son! Go as soon as possible to the Smolensky Cemetery.&#8220; Although greatly confused by this nonsense, Paraskeva still followed Blessed Xenia&#8217;s advice and went. At the cemetery, she saw a crowd of people, and when she approached, she learned that a coachman had knocked over a pregnant woman. On the ground, the woman gave birth to a boy and passed away. Everyone wondered who she was and if she had any relatives, but they couldn&#8217;t find out. Seeing God&#8217;s providence in this event, Paraskeva took the boy with her, adopted him, and raised him in the strictness of Christian life.
